Fitness is just the beginning

Building Annex has been both a rewarding and heartbreaking journey. Rewarding because I get to honour the life of one of the most unforgettable people I’ve known—and heartbreaking because he isn’t here to share it. The quiet, driving force behind starting Annex was a man named Dylan Jones. The life of the party. The captain of just about every team he was ever on. The best friend, brother and son we could have asked for.

He left us far, far too soon after a brave and valiant fight against cancer. He was my brother-in-law who felt like blood. He was 27. Dyl believed in doing what you actually want to do in this life. He is the reason we found the courage to fight for this dream and build this space. He’s the reason it’s so much more than a gym.

The Patient Comfort Fund

We can’t pass a hospital without thinking of Dyl or the families inside who face unexpected costs, on top of the fear, confusion and pain of diagnosis. From necessary time off work to experimental treatments, cancer is expensive.

We don’t think those facing cancer should have to worry about certain unexpected costs during treatment, and that’s why we are partnering with the BC Cancer Foundation in support of their Patient Comfort Fund. With your support, we can help make a cancer patient’s journey a little more comfortable.

Join the Fight Club

Every week, we offer a class by donation—it helps community members from around Victoria access dynamic, professionally led workouts, and it supports our cause, The Patient Comfort Fund. Want to help us help cancer patients? Check the schedule for upcoming Fight Club classes benefitting The Patient Comfort Fund.

Why Fight Club? Because like so many cancer patients, Dyl put up the fight of his life. We welcome you to join our unofficial club in the fight against cancer and the unrelenting warriors who are leading the way.

Before he left us, Dyl gave us so much. Fight Club classes are our way of honouring him—by building a space that prioritizes health as medicine and a community that gives back, all while learning from his example.

Be kind, be brave and remember: The thing that’s scares you isn’t that scary at all.
